Do you like listening to music?
Yes, I am a big fan of music all these years. I sometimes listen to music before sleeping at night for one hour and when I am driving, which will both help me relax. I am very fond of pop music from Taiwan and Hong Kong, and I also frequently listen to some American pop singers, like the Backstreet Boys. I can feel the energy when I hear the tune. Personally, I am interested in the traditional instrumental music, like erhu, mixed with pianos and guitars.

What kind of music is popular in your country now and what kind will be in the future?
I’m not versed in the various genres of music so I’ll try my best to speculate. As far as I remember, pop-ballad has always been something that people enjoy listening to. Slow-paced songs about love and romance attract listeners of all ages and I don’t see them going anywhere soon. Interestingly, there has been an emergence of Rap music in Vietnam. After years of being nurtured by the underground community, Rap became mainstream last year with the two rap contests, namely “Rap Viet” and “King of Rap”.

Do you think music is important?
Yes, of course. That is to say, I cannot imagine what my life would be like without music. Firstly, I believe that music plays an important role in people’s lives. For example, we use it to soothe our minds after a hard day at work, or it can provide us with the rhythm to dance to.

Do parents in your country require their children to learn and to play musical instruments?
I wouldn’t use the word “require”, but I would say more and more parents have become aware that playing musical instruments isn’t just a hobby. They are putting their children into weekend classes or hiring private tutors to teach their children to play piano, violin or guitar. Although most people, myself included, have yet to grasp the influence of playing instruments on a child’s mind, I still think it is beneficial to young children in some way, intellectually. On a practical note, some universities have begun to take into account the artistic achievements of their prospective students beside their academic records. So learning how to play an instrument is helpful one way or another.

What are the benefits of listening to music?
Just as other kinds of art, music has become a dispensable part of human culture. It brings us nutritious spiritual foods and enriches our leisure life. In addition, music can do well to us very much. It can elicit the imagination of us. And, it teaches us how to distinguish beauty from nature. Listening to music, I am sure you will be soon be refreshed from a day’s hard work.

How has technology affected the kinds of music popular with young people?
I think technology has made more music available to the public in an amount that is unprecedented. You now have access to the world’s entire catalog of music in one way or another. I have a multitude of genres from which to pick from, an unlimited number of artists at the tip of my fingers and music from everywhere in the world. Do I feel like listening to an American pop singer? Or maybe some Mongolian hardcore rock? Or even some Australian techno DJ? Along with the selection, social media has made it much easier for people to feel closer and identify to their favourite artists and it has become an integral part of marketing. So artists who are social media savvy tend to be more popular than others.

When do you listen to music?
To be honest, I have my headphones on most of the day, whether I’m at home studying or out and about in the city. I even play some specially edited playlists when I’m taking a shower at night!

What kind of music do old people enjoy?
The elder generation mostly like traditional folk music, which is kind of boring and uninspiring to those of us in the younger generation; but they tend to like to sing along, so it’s a good style for them, I suppose.

How long do you listen to music every day?
Oh, Let me think a bit. I guess I listen to music for about half an hour every day. I would, for example, listen when I get home from school, or in the evenings before I go to the bed. On weekends, however, I listen to music much more. For example, I would invite my best friend over to my house, and we would listen to our favorite CDs for a few hours at a time.

Are you a good singer?
Well, to be honest, my vocal range isn’t so big and I can’t hit the high notes and I’m often out of tune, but I sometimes do go to KTV and sing songs with my friends, which is very enjoyable.
